He, his wife and their first 2 children, Joseph and Delecta, came to Throop from Vermont in 1801 in a caravan headed that way. In 1817 he donated a plot of land for the Baptist Church which he then supported. He reportedly weighed 300 lbs. He had 8 children by his first wife, and 8 by the second. In addition to farming, he was a master builder. The 1810 census shows Friend with 4 sons under 10 years old, and 1
daughter age 10-15. The 1820 census shows 2 boys under 10, and 5 boys
10-15. David and Joseph Barber were in Mentz in 1820, and are likely to
be sons of Friend.

Nathan fought in the Mexican War under General Fremont. He was in the Pyle Whiteman party migrating from Missouri to California in 1846 just ahead of the Donner party. He was a gold miner for a time, and then in 1850 he bought 250 acres in Suisun, Solano Co ad farmed grain, livestock and trees.
