Theme notes

Theme: Theme is defined as a main idea or an underlying meaning of a literary work that may be stated directly or must be inferred. Theme should be a full sentence, not a one word topic.

Theme vs. moral: Morals tell you what is right and how to behave. Theme often provides the reason behind the moral

Example for Beauty and the Beast-

Topic: Appearances/Beauty

Moral: Don’t judge a book by its cover

Because

Theme: Beauty can lie behind the most hideous exterior and beauty can hide a hideous interior

OR

Topic: Change/love-

Moral: Don’t give up on anyone

Because

Theme: Love can change even the coldest of hearts

Directions: Categorize the responses below as topic, moral, or theme. Then use the letters on the back to unscramble and answer the riddles for each category.
Topic

I recently watched Guardians of the Galaxy 2. The theme of the movie was about friendship and working together.
I have recently read a book called Throne of Glass. This books themes are trust and courage. Celaena must have courage to become the King's Champion after being put in his labor camp for a year. Chaol and Dorian must trust her not to betray them because she is Adarlan's Assassin.
The book "Speak" is about overcoming Post-Traumatic Stress.

I recently read a book called "Everything, Everything". The book's theme was bravery and risks. Maddy cares so much for Olly that she would risk her own life to help him. She also started living instead of just "being alive" which is very brave.
I recently read a book called Murder on the Orient express and its reoccurring theme is suspicion because everyone is a suspect about a mysterious murder that happened on the train.

Moral

The theme of the book "Need" is to be grateful with what you have and not ask for stuff.

I recently read "The Outsiders". The theme was to accept people who they are, and not judge them based off of what they look like. I got that idea from when Ponyboy and Cherry talked and Cherry said that he was the opposite of a Greaser because of how he really was.

I recently read the Inheritance series, and the theme is stay true to your friends. This is evidenced by the bond shown by the dragons and their riders.
I recently watched the movie Django: Unchained. The theme is to never lose sight of who you are.

I recently read a book called Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda and the theme of it was to respect everyone without a bias on them regardless of their race, religion, or sexual orientation.

Theme

I am reading the book "The Martian". I think the theme is that people are naturally inclined to help each other. This is illustrated by the willingness of the entire planet Earth to help one man come home.
The film Dunkirk shows that sometimes victory is just surviving
I have recently read The Running Man by Stephen King. I think theme of the book is that the world is becoming more and more uncivilized. The book has game shows an TV, like treadmill To Bucks- a game show where they make chronic heart, liver, or lung patients run for money. Many people in the book laugh at the show and that shows how uncivilized the people are.
The book that I most recently read was the Outsiders. The theme was that friends and family are your support rock and they are there to help you from going to dark places.

-

I recently saw Gone Girl. The theme of the movie is that everyone acts like someone else around other people and that can take a toll on you both mentally and physically.

Remember that theme should have a subject and verb. Sometimes, people write a gerund phrase or infinitive phrase as their theme. However, if the theme you identify is a gerund phrase or infinitive phrase, you don’t actually have a verb; therefore, you don’t actually have a theme. Circle the gerund phrase and underline the infinitive phrase in the sentences below to notice how they are incorrectly used as themes.

  1. The theme is to respect your elders

  1. The theme is appreciating what you have

  1. The theme is doing what is right in the face of extraordinary obstacles.

  1. The theme is to believe in yourself.
