(Purpose of a glossary-see comprehension strategy)

Activate/Build Prior Knowledge:

“Have you ever been camping in the mountains? What are some activities you and your family participated in?” Talk with the students about where we live is often like where we work. Look at the pictures in the book. Page 4 has a picture of a man on a horse. What do you think his role is living in the Rockies? Look at page 13. What do you think his role is for visitors in the Rockies?”

Phonics/Mechanics:
When a word ends with y, you drop the y and add ies to make the plural.
Rocky, study, story, family, strategy, community, activity, responsibility, opportunity, city, industry, country, county
Go over these words. Make the flipbooks before the reading group. Cut some cardstock that is 8 ½ by 2 inches. Staple all the base words on the left hand side. Staples the ies on the right hand side so that when it is flipped down it covers the y to make the plural word.
Comprehension Strategy:
Summarize important details.
