Adobe Acrobat Reader

Finding Words

You can use the Find command to find a complete word or part of a word in the current PDF document. Acrobat Reader looks for the word by reading every word on every page in the file, including text in form fields.

To find a word using the Find command:

  1. Click the Find button (Binoculars), or choose Edit > Find.

  2. Enter the text to find in the text box.

  3. Select search options if necessary:

Match Whole Word Only finds only occurrences of the complete word you enter in the box. For example, if you search for the word stick, the words tick and sticky will not be highlighted.
Match Case finds only words that contain exactly the same capitalization you enter in the box.
Find Backwards starts the search from the current page and goes backwards through the document.

  1. Click Find. Acrobat Reader finds the next occurrence of the word.

To find the next occurrence of the word, Do one of the following:

Choose Edit > Find Again

Reopen the find dialog box, and click Find Again.

(The word must already be in the Find text box.)

Copying and pasting text and graphics to another application
You can select text or a graphic in a PDF document, copy it to the Clipboard, and paste it into another application such as a word processor. You can also paste text into a PDF document note or into a bookmark. Once the selected text or graphic is on the Clipboard, you can switch to another application and paste it into another document.

Note: If a font copied from a PDF document is not available on the system displaying the copied text, the font cannot be preserved. A default font is substituted.

To select and copy it to the clipboard:

  1. Select the text tool T, and do one of the following:

To select a line of text, select the first letter of the sentence or phrase and drag to

the last letter.

To select multiple columns of text (horizontally), hold down Ctrl+Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) as you drag across the width of the document.

To select a column of text (vertically), Hold down Ctrl+Alt (Windows) or Option+Command (Mac OS) as you drag the length of the document.

To select all the text on the page, choose Edit > Select All. In single page mode, all the text on the current page is selected. In Continuous or Continuous – facing mode, most of the text in the document is selected. When you release the mouse button, the selected text is highlighted. To deselect the text and start over, click anywhere outside the selected text.

The Select All command will not select all the text in the document. A workaround for this (Windows) is to use the Edit > Copy command. Choose Edit > Copy to copy the selected text to the clipboard.

  1. To view the text, choose Window > Show Clipboard

In Windows 95, the Clipboard Viewer is not installed by default and you cannot use the Show Clipboard command until it is installed. To install the Clipboard Viewer, Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, and then click the Windows Setup tab. Double-click Accessories, check Clipboard Viewer, and click OK.

SUP. ANTONOVICH, MAYOR: OKAY. SUPERVISOR SOLIS.

SUP. HILDA SOLIS: THANK YOU, MR. MAYOR. I'D LIKE TO MAKE A PRESENTATION THIS MORNING ON BEHALF OF THE SALVATION ARMY BELL SHELTER. A FEW MONTHS AGO I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT THE BELL SHELTER IN SOUTHEAST LOS ANGEST DISTRICT.S A PART OF THE FIRST DISTRICT. I WAS TRULY INSPIRED BY THE WORK AND PASSION THAT THIS COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION HAS TO ADDRESS THE ISSUES OF HOMELESSNESS, PARTICULARLY THE MENTAL HEALTH NECESSITIES OF OUR RESIDENTS. THE SALVATION ARMY BELL SHELTER HOUSES ABOUT 290 RESIDENTS. THEY IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THOUSANDS OF LIVES, HOMELESS MEN AND WOMEN, THROUGH THEIR TRANSITIONAL CARE AND SERVICES. THEY ALSO DEAL WITH INDIVIDUALS THAT HAVE ISSUES WITH SUBSTANCE ABUSE, JOB REFERRALS AND LIFE SKILL CLASSES. THEY'RE ALSO ONE OF THE FEW FACILITIES IN THE AREA THAT OFFER A NEUROFEEDBACK PROGRAM. THIS PROGRAM HAS HELPED VETERANS SHIFT TOWARDS A MORE FUNCTIONAL AND STABLE BRAIN CAPACITY ADDRESSING PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS AND ILLNESSES SUCH AS P.T.S.D., DEPRESSION, ANXIETY AND INSOMNIA. TO THINK THAT THIS THERAPY CAN PROVIDE PATIENTS WITH THE HOPE OF BEING ABLE TO RECOVER AND GAIN A NORMAL LIFE TO ME WAS TREMENDOUS. AND I GOT TO VISIT WITH SEVERAL INDIVIDUALS THAT HAD GONE THROUGH SOME OF THE THERAPIES THERE. I THOUGHT IT WAS A PHENOMENAL OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO SHARE THEIR EXPERTISE AND THEIR WORK HERE WITH THE BOARD. THE BELL SHELTER'S PASSION TO SERVE OUR VETERANS IN OUR COMMUNITY TO THEIR FULLEST CAPACITY HAS BEEN TRULY AN INSPIRATION FOR MANY OF US. ON BEHALF OF THE FIRST DISTRICT AND THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, I AM PLEASED TODAY TO PRESENT THEM WITH THIS COMMENDATION. [APPLAUSE.]

SPEAKER: WE'RE HONORED TO GET THIS, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY WE'RE HONORED TO HAVE HELPED THOSE MEN AND WOMEN WHO HAVE SERVED AND ARE SUFFERING MENTAL CHALLENGES AFTER SERVING SO THAT WE CAN LIVE A FREE LIFE IN THIS BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY. THIS PROGRAM THAT WE DO HELPS PEOPLE THAT HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO SLEEP, THAT HAVE HAD SEVERE ANXIETY BECAUSE OF P.T.S.D. TO BE ABLE TO SLEEP, TO BE ABLE TO FUNCTION. AND THEN THEY CAN GET A JOB AND JOIN BACK INTO NORMAL SOCIETY LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. AND IT'S THE LEAST THEY DESERVE AND WE'RE HONORED TO BE ABLE TO BE PART OF THAT. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

SUP. HILDA SOLIS: NEXT I'D LIKE TO CALL UP A VERY SPECIAL AND DEAR FRIEND THAT I'VE KNOWN NOW FOR THE PAST 25 YEARS. AND THIS IS A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY TO RECOGNIZE HIM. DAVID ALLGOOD. I WANT YOU TO WELCOME HIM THIS MORNING WHO IS RETIRING AFTER 25 YEARS WITH THE CALIFORNIA LEAGUE OF CONSERVATION VOTERS. [APPLAUSE.] MAYBE YOU DON'T KNOW THIS, BUT DAVID HAS PLAYED A VERY SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN HELPING SO MANY OF US BETTER UNDERSTAND THE KIND OF EXCITEMENT AND CHALLENGES AROUND ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE. HE'S DONE SO MUCH OUTSTANDING WORK THROUGHOUT L.A. COUNTY AND THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA. I CAN'T EVEN BEGIN TO GO THROUGH ALL THE ACKNOWLEDGMENTS THAT HE'S RECEIVED. BUT ONE THAT COMES TO MIND IS THAT HE'S WORKED SO HARD TO BRING TWO VERY IMPORTANT ISSUES TOGETHER: HEALTH AS WELL AS ENVIRONMENTAL SECURITY FOR OUR COMMUNITIES. AND I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW EVER MORE IMPORTANT THAT IS AS WE TALK ABOUT THESE ISSUES TODAY AND AS THOSE DISCUSSIONS OCCUR TODAY IN SACRAMENTO. DAVID HAS BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN GROWING THE ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENT AND INCREASING ITS POLITICAL INFLUENCE IN CALIFORNIA. HE SERVED WITH DISTINCTION AS BOARD CHAIR FOR THE COALITION OF CLEAN AIR AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL ALLIANCE FOR CALIFORNIA'S HEALTH. HE PREVIOUSLY SERVED AS AN ALTERNATE COMMISSIONER ON THE CALIFORNIA COASTAL COMMISSION AND AS EX-OFFICIO MEMBER OF THE SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS CONSERVANCY. AS THE ALTERNATE TO THE GOVERNING BOARD MEMBER OF THE SANTA MONICA BAY RESTORATION COMMISSION, AS WELL. AND I KNOW SUPERVISOR KUEHL REALLY GETS ALL OF THIS. AND IF THAT ISN'T ENOUGH, HE ALSO WAS PAST MEMBER OF THE ADVISORY COUNCIL OF THE BALDWIN HILLS CONSERVANCY AND WAS A FOUNDING MEMBER OF SAL PACK, AMERICA'S FIRST SALVADORIAN AMERICAN POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE. SO HIS REACH GOES WELL BEYOND THE AREA OF ENVIRONMENT. IN SEPTEMBER OF 2001, DAVID ORGANIZED WHAT WOULD BECOME THE CALIFORNIA ALLIANCE, A COALITION OF PROGRESSIVE GROUPS INCLUDING C.L.C.V., THE CALIFORNIA NURSES ASSOCIATION, AND THE CONSUMER ATTORNEYS OF CALIFORNIA. DAVID ALLGOOD HAS RECEIVED NUMEROUS AWARDS, INCLUDING THE CONSUMER CHAMPION AWARD FROM THE CONSUMER ATTORNEYS OF CALIFORNIA AND AWARDED SPECIAL RECOGNITION FOR OUTSTANDING SUPPORT FROM CALIFORNIA SAFE SCHOOLS. IT IS WITH GREAT DISTINCTION AND ADMIRATION THAT WE HONOR HIM TODAY FOR ALL THAT HE HAS DONE. WE WILL MISS HIM, BUT WE KNOW THAT HE'S NOT GOING AWAY BECAUSE HE'S STILL AT IT. HE JUST TOLD ME ABOUT SOME ACTIVISM THAT HE'D LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN WITH OUR STUDENTS AROUND THE STATE. I'D LIKE TO RECOGNIZE SUPERVISOR KUEHL.

SUP. SHEILA KUEHL: THANK YOU, SUPERVISOR SOLIS. YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU HAVE A NAME LIKE ALLGOOD, YOU MUST THINK FROM THE TIME YOU'RE, YOU KNOW, AWARE, THAT IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE TO LIVE UP TO THAT NAME. LET ME SAY IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO LIVE UP TO THAT NAME. DAVID IS GOOD. I DON'T KNOW IF HE'S ALL GOOD. [LAUGHTER.] BUT HE HAS BEEN SO CENTRAL TO SO MUCH. IN MY EXPERIENCE RELATED PRIMARILY TO ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES, BUT THEN AGAIN, AS WELL, ON THE ALLIANCE. I BELIEVE THAT ON 9/11, WE WERE ACTUALLY AT A MEETING WHEN WE SAW ON THE SCREEN WHAT HAD HAPPENED AND SPENT THAT WHOLE DAY TRYING TO DEAL WITH THE GRIEF THAT WE WERE GOING THROUGH IN AMERICA. IT'S BEEN A LONG HISTORY, DAVID, AND I WANTED TO THANK YOU PERSONALLY FOR YOUR SERVICE, FOR YOUR FRIENDSHIP AND JUST FOR YOUR HEART. I MEAN, YOU BROUGHT SO MUCH TO THIS COUNTY AND THIS STATE. THANK YOU SO MUCH. [APPLAUSE.]
SUP. HILDA SOLIS: SUPERVISOR RIDLEY-THOMAS.
SUP. RIDLEY-THOMAS: WELL, THANK YOU VERY MUCH, SUPERVISOR SOLIS, FOR BRINGING DAVID IN TODAY. I THINK IT'S TRUE THAT A NUMBER OF US HAVE HAD LONG-STANDING EXPERIENCES WITH HIM WORKING ON ISSUES RELATED TO THE ENVIRONMENT, NOT THE LEAST OF WHICH IS ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE. SO I JUST WANT TO CONCLUDE BY SAYING: IT'S ALL GOOD. [LAUGHTER.]
SUP. HILDA SOLIS: CAN I ASK DAVID TO PLEASE SAY A FEW WORDS.

DAVID ALLGOOD: YEAH, FIRST I WANT TO THANK MARK YOUNG AND NICOLE ROBERTS FOR SANDBAGGING ME TELLING ME I WAS HAVING A MEETING WITH HILDA SOLIS TO DISCUSS SOME ISSUES. BUT THIS IS REALLY A TERRIFIC HONOR. SHEILA, THANK YOU FOR YOUR REMARKS, THANK YOU, MR. RIDLEY-THOMAS, THANK YOU FOR YOURS. I DON'T INTEND TO STOP WORKING ON THE ISSUES I CARE ABOUT, BUT IT'S TIME FOR ME TO LET YOUNGER PEOPLE TAKE THE LEAD. IT'S BEEN AN AMAZING 25 YEARS. I GOT TO MEET SOME OF THE MOST AMAZING PEOPLE. AND SOME OF THEM ARE SITTING ON THE COUNTY BOARD OF4 SUPERVISORS RIGHT NOW DOING GOOD WORK. SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH. [APPLAUSE.]
SUP. RIDLEY-THOMAS: MR. MAYOR AND COLLEAGUES, A SPECIAL DAY FOR ME AS WE HONOR A FELLOW WHO HAS BEEN MY RIGHT HAND, IN MANY WAYS, SINCE I'VE BEEN HERE AT THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS. HE IS VINCENT MEREDITH HARRIS. GIVE HIM A ROUND OF APPLAUSE, WOULD YOU? [APPLAUSE] VINCENT, DELIGHTED THAT HE IS JOINED BY HIS WIFE, CELESTE ROSE, GIVE HER A BIGGER ROUND OF APPLAUSE, WON'T YOU? [APPLAUSE] VINCENT STANDS HERE TODAY BECAUSE HE IS ABOUT TO BEGIN HIS RETIREMENT AFTER 40 YEARS OF EXTRAORDINARY PUBLIC SERVICE. [APPLAUSE.] DAY ONE HE WAS HERE WITH ME IN DECEMBER OF 2008 AND HAS CONTINUED TO PRESS HIS WAY AND THE EXTRAORDINARY THINGS THAT HAVE BEEN DONE IN THE SECOND DISTRICT ARE IN NO SMALL MEASURE ATTRIBUTABLE TO HIS SKILL, HIS INSIGHT, HIS BEARING AND HIS COMMITMENT TO PUBLIC SERVICE. HE SERVED IN A VARIETY OF ADMINISTRATIVE AND POLICY AS WELL AS POLITICAL ROLES OVER THE COURSE OF HIS PUBLIC SERVICE CAREER. VINCENT WAS A KEY STAFF MEMBER TO THE LATE JUANITA MILLINDER MCDONALD BOTH IN THE ASSEMBLY AND IN CONGRESS. HE SERVED AS HER LEAD POLICY PERSON AND ADMINISTRATIVE PERSON AND PROVIDED INVALUABLE AND FOCUSED OVERSIGHT AND LEADERSHIP AS DEPUTY CHIEF OF STAFF AND UNDERSECRETARY FOR CABINET AFFAIRS FOR THE OFFICE OF CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR GRAY DAVIS. HE PROVIDED HIGH-LEVEL MANAGEMENT AND STRATEGIC COUNSEL FOR CAMPAIGNS OF MANY ELECTED OFFICIALS, INCLUDING SENATOR DIANE FEINSTEIN, CONGRESSWOMAN JUANITA MILLINDER MCDONALD, GOVERNOR GRAY DAVIS AND PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA. VINCENT HAS SERVED TIRELESSLY OVER THE PAST DECADE IN GET OUT THE VOTE CAMPAIGNS FOR THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN VOTER REGISTRATION, EDUCATION AND PARTICIPATION PROJECT. HE'S WIDELY ACKNOWLEDGED FOR HIS EXCEPTIONAL KNOWLEDGE OF LEGISLATIVE AND POLITICAL PROCESSES, HIS REMARKABLE ABILITY TO RECALL HISTORICAL DATA AND EVENTS AD NAUSEAM. [LAUGHTER.] HIS CAPACITY IS HANDLING COMPLEX AND HIGH-LEVEL SPECIAL PROJECTS, HIS LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS ARE SECOND TO NONE. AND HE IS ONE WITH AN UNSTINTING LOYALTY AND DISCRETION, UNIQUE REPRESENTATION OF EVERY OFFICE HE HAS ADVISED AND/OR MANAGED. HE IS ONE EXCEPTIONAL HUMAN BEING. AND IT'S ON THIS OCCASION ON BEHALF OF A GRATEFUL COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES AND EVEN MORE GRATEFUL MEMBER OF THIS BOARD AND STAFF WHO HAS HAD THE PLEASURE OF WORKING WITH HIM THAT WE SAY TO YOU THAT WE WILL INDEED MISS YOUR PRESENCE BUT AT THE SAME TIME, WE NEVER, EVER FORGET YOUR CONTRIBUTION. VINCENT MEREDITH HARRIS, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN. [APPLAUSE.]
VINCENT MEREDITH HARRIS: THANK YOU VERY MUCH, SUPERVISOR RIDLEY-THOMAS. YOU KNOW, VERY RARELY AS A STAFF PERSON THAT'S ACCUSTOMED TO WRITING TALKING POINTS AND REMARKS TO YOU GET A CHANCE TO SPEAK ON YOUR OWN BEHALF AND IN YOUR OWN VOICE. SO WHEN PEOPLE SAY "HARRIS, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO NOW THAT YOU'RE RETIRED"? MY IMPULSE IS TO SAY "TELL YOU ALL HOW I REALLY FEEL ABOUT THINGS." [LAUGHTER.] AND SO I FIGURED THIS WOULD BE AN APPROPRIATE OCCASION TO START. [LAUGHTER.] [APPLAUSE.] SO HOLD ONTO YOUR HATS, PLEASE. THESE WILL BE VERY BRIEF, I ASSURE YOU. I WANT TO THANK THE MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS FOR ALL THAT YOU HAVE DONE AND CONTINUE TO DO AND FOR THE COURTESY IN ACKNOWLEDGING ME ON THIS OCCASION. I'M HONORED AND I APPRECIATE THE RECOGNITION. SECONDLY, I'D LIKE TO THANK SUPERVISOR RIDLEY-THOMAS FOR THE CHANCE TO CULMINATE THIS PHASE OF MY PUBLIC SERVICE CAREER. IN HIS EMPLOY AND UNDER HIS LEADERSHIP. YOUR VISION FOR THE SECOND DISTRICT AND THE COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES, THE ASPIRATIONS YOU ARTICULATED, THE GOALS YOU SET, THE STANDARDS YOU ESTABLISHED AND THE RESULTS YOU ACHIEVED HAVE MADE ME A BETTER SERVANT LEADER. I KNOW I SPEAK FOR MY COLLEAGUES: YOUR INTELLECT, LEADERSHIP, DRIVE, CONSIDERATION AND GENEROSITY HAVE MADE ME -- US -- BETTER. IT HAS BEEN BOTH A PRIVILEGE AND AN HONOR. THIRDLY, I WANT TO THANK THE REST OF THE COUNTY FAMILY FOR ALL THAT YOU DO TO MAKE GOVERNMENT WORK AND THROUGH OUR WORK TO PROTECT THE VULNERABLE, REALIZE OUR COMMON HUMANITY AND HELP FULFILL THE LOFTY AMBITIONS OF CIVILIZATION. WHETHER WE GOVERN, ADMINISTER, MANAGE OR SERVE, EACH OF US HAS A ROLE TO PLAY. AND FOR THE VAST MAJORITY OF US, WE PERFORM OUR ROLE WITH DIGNITY, GRACE, PROFESSIONALISM AND PURPOSE. I ESPECIALLY WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE BOARD EXECUTIVE OFFICE STAFF AND PATRICK OGAWA AND THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER SACHI HAMAI FOR YOUR WORK. I CAN SAY WITHOUT FEAR OF CONTRADICTION THAT THIS SUPERVISOR AND THE STAFF OF THIS OFFICE APPRECIATE WHAT YOU AND OTHER DEPARTMENTS OF THE COUNTY DO FOR OUR CONSTITUENTS. THE STAFF OF THE SECOND DISTRICT; WHAT CAN I SAY? YOU MAY WORK FOR THE SECOND DISTRICT,BUT YOU ARE SECOND TO NONE. YOU EXHIBIT THE HIGH STANDARDS OUR CONSTITUENTS DESERVE. YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES. BY YOUR EXAMPLE YOU DEMONSTRATE THE ATTRIBUTES OF WORKPLACE DIVERSITY, TOLERANCE AND MUTUAL RESPECT. YOU ALSO EXPRESS THE COMMON VALUES OF SERVICE, INTEGRITY, EXCELLENCE AND COMPASSION. I KNOW THIS BECAUSE YOU'VE TOLERATED MY IDIOSYNCRASIES FOR THE PAST SEVEN YEARS. [LAUGHTER.] I'M PROFOUNDLY GRATEFUL FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE WORKED WITH YOU AND TO HAVE FORGED THE BONDS OF FRIENDSHIP THAT WE ALL SHARE. FINALLY, I WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND THANK MY WIFE OF NEARLY 30 YEARS, CELESTE ROSE. [APPLAUSE.] SHE HAS PROVIDED WISE POLITICAL COUNSEL, GOOD CAREER ADVICE, THE FLEXIBILITY TO PURSUE A PUBLIC SERVICE CAREER THAT HAS BEEM MOST FULFILLING, AND THE ENDURANCE TO REMAIN BY MY SIDE, WHICH I MUST SAY IS NO SMALL FEAT. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO RETURNING TO OUR HOME IN SACRAMENTO AND THE NEXT STAGE OF OUR JOURNEY TOGETHER. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, CELESTE ROSE. [APPLAUSE.] I WANT TO CONCLUDE BY SAYING THIS. THROUGHOUT MY PUBLIC SERVICE CAREER, I HAVE SOUGHT TO MAKE GOVERNMENT PERFORM FOR THE COMMON GOOD AND EQUITABLY FOR THE COMMON INTEREST. QUALITY EDUCATION, HEALTHCARE FOR ALL, AFFORDABLE HOUSING, A LIVING WAGE AND RETIREMENT SECURITY. WHAT WE DO, THE VISION WHICH WE ASPIRE, THE DECISIONS WE MAKE, THE JUSTICE WE SEEK, THE MANNER IN WHICH WE EXECUTE HAS REAL CONSEQUENCES AND IMPACTS ON REAL PEOPLE. AND WHILE NO ONE OF US CAN DO EVERYTHING, EVERY ONE OF US MUST CONTINUE TO DO SOMETHING TO MAKE OUR WORLD BETTER. THESE ARE THE VALUES THAT WERE REINFORCED BY MY ASSIGNMENTS EACH DAY I CAME TO WORK. I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THE FRIENDSHIPS AND CAMARADERIE I DEVELOPED WHILE WORKING WITH YOU. THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE.]
