Lexics: new words & word – combinations

Grammar: Present Participle ( Participle I ), its functions & forming


Aim: -to teach the students to tell about the structure of the alimentary

tract & use it in their speech

-before speaking on the text a student should revise the grammar,

new words & word – combinations of the text “The Alimentary

Tract” & should be asked for home task on reading.
Basic thematic issues:
Lexic:

-the students will get acquainted with the structure of the

alimentary tract;

-the students should know lexics & grammar material of the

theme, use it in monologues & dialogues, to ask & answer the

questions, to improve reading,

listening & speaking ;

-it would help the student to draw a topic about the structure of

alimentary tract due to the given text.
Grammar:

-Remind grammar: (look at grammar reference, pp.296 –297)


Present Participle is formed by adding the suffix -ing to the stem of the verb;

The following spelling rules should be observed:





  1. If a verb ends in a mute e, the mute e is dropped before adding the suffix

    • ing: to give – giving, to close – closing

  2. If a verb ends in a consonant preceded by a vowel rendering a short stressed sound, the final consonant is doubled before adding the suffix -ing: to run – running, to admit – admitting.

A final I is doubled if is doubled if it preceded by a vowel letter rendering a short stressed sound, stressed or unstressed: to expel – expelling, to travel – traveling

  1. The verbs to die, to lie & to tie form Participle Present in the following way: dying, lying, tying.

Participle Present is translated in Russian действительным причастием с суффиксами -ущ (ющ), -ащ (ящ) to carry – carrying -несущий, to make – making -делающий.

Read & remember the pronunciation of the following words. Translate them:

Phonetic Reading:

Listen & practise the pronunciation of the following tape-recorded words & word combinations:

1.a mouth [ mauθ ], open you mouth, there are 32 teeth in the mouth, the hard & soft palates are in the mouth


2.a stomach [’st mək ],the stomach is an inner organ, the stomach consists of four coats; the lower portion of the stomach
3.a tongue [ t η ],the patient has a coated tongue; the tongue is the organ of taste

4.an intestine [ in’testin ], the small and the large intestine are in the abdominal cavity


5.through [ θru: ],to pass through the vessels; the food passes through the pharynx to the esophagus


Read & pay attention of pronunciation the words

1.Read & translate the following sentences. Pay attention to the use of construction Present Participle

1. The liver consisting of lobes is covered with a fibrous coat. 2.The peritoneum is a serous coat covering the inner surface of the abdominal wall. 3.The blood passing through the portal vein is carried to the liver. 4. Making the medical examination of the patient the doctor considered that his condition was normal. 5. The fibrous bands forming the muscular structure of the heart are divided into two groups.
2. Make up sentences, using constructions of Participle I & translate them
