This week, I’m on location at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida celebrating the 500th Chris Robinson Travel Show

There’s so much in life worth celebrating! Birthdays. Anniversaries. Reunions. Personal Triumphs. So during 2009, Disney Parks will make it easier for you to magnify the moment in wonderful Disney style! This is the year to gather with all the people who make you the happiest and celebrate at the place where dreams come true.

To make your celebration even more memorable, you’ll be met with new entertainment and unique experiences that light up your occasion with pure Disney magic. And right now with special offers, you’ll be able to kick-off 2009 with a Walt Disney World Resort vacation at a rate so incredible, you won't want to pass it up.

What Will You Celebrate?

The Walt Disney World Resort has always been a place where Guests celebrate milestones - to propose marriage, celebrate a child’s graduation, or to pull the whole family together for the golden anniversary of their parents. It’s a trend we’ve noticed for some time in our parks. In 2009, Walt Disney World is poised to turn any special occasion into an exceptional memory with the launch of What Will You Celebrate.

Findings of a nationwide survey of Canadian adults showed travelers seek out special moments and milestones to celebrate – “celebration vacations.” Research showed that when they take that “celebration vacation,” families are looking for destinations that provide activities for children and – better yet – activities adults and children can enjoy together. It’s not surprising that Disney Parks topped the list of destinations where families would most like to celebrate these special occasions.

Canadian families are hitting the road to mark life’s special occasions – birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, reunions and more. Disney parks already are filled with favourite characters, world-class attractions and entertainment, and legendary guest service, offering the perfect setting for celebrating the special occasions in life.

Customizing Your Celebration

Guests can add on to the fun, choosing from more than 200 experiences to customize their celebrations. Depending on the Disney Park they are headed to, guests can order everything from special dining to princess tea parties, from yacht cruises to treasure hunting on a pirate sailing adventure, from a quiet trail ride to parasailing thrills. Or they can opt for magical experiences for their group – from dessert parties to a Magic Kingdom fireworks cruise to special entertainment.

Celebrating in the Parks

Disney has a new line-up of entertainment, allowing guests to focus their celebration on favourite characters, attractions and stories to create a custom celebration in the park, including:

Street Parties: Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort comes to life with interactive street parties. The call to “Celebrate Today!” goes out to guests, music floods the streets, dancing kicks into high gear and the parks become “the happiest party on Earth.”

Tomorrowland Party: A high-energy, retro-futuristic music video dance party features Stitch, an interactive dance troupe, and a DJ celebration host who’s inviting all Walt Disney World guests to come party, dance and celebrate.

Park Décor: The parks are decorated with colourful banners, balloons and festive party

hats – as if awaiting your celebration.

Buttons: Complimentary celebration buttons will help Disney cast members and fellow guests recognize you and your celebration.

New Attractions

Toy Story Mania! - Guests ride through and compete in interactive, 4D games with characters inspired by Disney•Pixar’s "Toy Story" films. Guests grab 3-D glasses before boarding a ride vehicle and zipping off into a world of immersive, midway-style games hosted by favourite characters like Woody, Buzz, Rex and Hamm! Guests use a spring-action shooter to launch virtual darts at balloons, rings at aliens, eggs at barnyard targets and beyond. Then you see who can rack up the most points.
Block Party Bash, the energetic, interactive street party inspired by Disney•Pixar films, has become a guest favourite. It features over 20 of the most popular Disney•Pixar characters (including Woody, Buzz, Mike and Sulley)! This incredible parade doubles as an interactive street spectacular, complete with amazing music, fantastic floats, one-of-a-kind trampoline units, aerial acrobatics and endless surprises.
New Pixie Hollow area at the Magic Kingdom where guests can meet Tinker Bell and her friends from the new Disney “Fairies” movie. A magical forest will gradually shrink guests down to fairy size as they enter Pixie Hollow, a special place deep in the heart of Never Land, where a baby's first laugh brought Tinker Bell to life. As Guests hear Tinker Bell speak for the first time, they also are sure to meet one or more of her fairy friends.

The American Idol Experience – Opening soon at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, this exhilarating new attraction will feature all the glitz and glamour of the hit TV series’ set and will give you an opportunity to experience the thrill as if you were at the show. As a member of the attraction audience, you’ll have a chance to vote for your favourite on stage singer using an interactive keypad at your seat.

There is a Canadian connection: Elias, Walt’s father, lived in Ontario
At Magic Kingdom, guests enjoy "Cinderellabration," an enchanting musical spectacular direct from Tokyo Disneyland. Performed beneath the glittering spires of Cinderella Castle -- adorned for the anniversary with a swirling overlay of golden decorations -- the live stage show enacts the coronation of Cinderella. This royal event is attended by a coterie of Disney's most-beloved princesses.
At Epcot, guests take flight aboard Soarin', an exhilarating hang-gliding journey over the magnificent landscapes of California. Appropriately enough, this incredible aerial tour of the Golden State comes to Epcot from Disney's California Adventure in Anaheim.

At Disney-MGM Studios, the "Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show" spotlights the high-octane best of the movie industry's stunt masters. Inspired by the blockbuster show from Disneyland Resort Paris, this action extravaganza sends cars, motorcycles and watercraft careening and jumping across an enormous Mediterranean village set.

At Disney's Animal Kingdom, the new Expedition Everest thrill ride offers thrills, chills and spills as the legend of the yeti comes to life in a dramatic high-speed train adventure that combines coaster-style excitement with a close encounter with the hairy kind among the icy peaks of the world's highest mountain. This thrilling journey through the treacherous Himalayas features hair-pin turns, high speeds and a massive 24-metres drop. But it's the mountain's guardian, the mysterious Yeti, stalking every rider who dares to enter his realm that really makes this an adventure to remember!

FASTPASS - at no additional charge - Disney's patented FASTPASS system enables guests to avoid lines at the most popular attractions. Issued to a guest with the swipe of a park ticket, each FASTPASS allows the guest to return to an attraction during a one-hour window with little or no wait. Disney studies show FASTPASS users save hours of wait time and see 25 percent more attractions and shows.

Tip Boards -- Located near the center of each of the four parks, tip boards are good planning tools for guests enabling them to get around in the most efficient way. Tip boards feature up-to-the-minute readouts of wait times at all of the parks' attractions. Cast members are on hand to lend assistance.

Disney's Magical Express Service -- Guests of most hotels on Walt Disney World property can take advantage of an innovative service called Disney's Magical Express, which offers complimentary airport shuttle and luggage delivery. With the new service, guests check their bags at their hometown airport, bypass baggage claim at Orlando International Airport (OIA) and board state-of-the-art motor coaches to Walt Disney World Resort -- as their bags are transferred to their room. Disney's Magical Express service makes guests' return to Orlando International Airport hassle-free as well.

Extra Magic Hours Benefit -- Each day, one of the four Walt Disney World theme parks opens an hour early or stays up to an extra three hours, so Guests of Disney Resort Hotels have the opportunity to get extra time in the parks to experience select attractions and meet and greet Disney characters. There is no additional charge.

Younger children: delight in the whimsical Disney activities designed especially for them -- not to mention magical meetings with the Disney Characters. (Remember, children under three are granted complimentary admission to the Theme Parks.) The Theme Parks offer stroller rental and baby changing facilities. All of Disney's Hotels offer babysitting service and select hotels even provide supervised children's activities. Disney's Blizzard Beach: Take smaller children to Tike's Peak, a kid-size version of Mt. Gushmore with scaled-down attractions.

Plan to arrive to the parks early and take a break in the middle of the day for lunch and afternoon naps (for parents and tots). Head back to the theme parks in the late afternoon after everyone is well-rested and ready for more fun. Baby Services locations are ideal for moms with infants. Located at all four Disney theme parks, the private rooms offer rocking chairs and low lighting for nursing mothers, feeding rooms with highchairs, bibs and plastic spoons, plus diaper-changing rooms. Baby-care products such as disposable diapers, pull-on rubber pants, formula and teethers are for sale. No need to pack up all the baby gear for a trip to Disney. In-park stroller rental ($10 US a day) makes traveling through the theme parks easy. Reserve cribs in advance at one of Disney's resorts. Bed guardrails are available upon request. In-room baby-sitting services (407/828-0920) or resort-based child-care programs such as Mouseketeer Clubhouse or The Neverland Club (407/939-3463) are a great option for parents looking for a night out without the little ones. A theme-park "rider-switch" policy gives both mom and dad a chance to enjoy the latest attractions without the double wait. A parent who waits with a young child while the other parent rides the attraction can get on the ride with minimal wait time once the first parent comes off.

Adults Rule!

Resort Hotels feature complete full-service health facilities, plus a variety of recreation that includes tennis, water sports, fishing, horseback riding -- even six golf courses. Of course, when night falls, adults will love to stay up late at either of two night-time entertainment areas.

Disney Value for Money

Kids under age 3 are provided free admission to all Walt Disney World theme parks.

Kids aged 17-and-under stay at no additional charge in their parents' room (up to the designated room capacity).

Guests save on gas and parking fees by using the Walt Disney World transportation system of buses, monorails and water launches available to them -- at no additional charge.

Quenching a vacation-long thirst is easy: Guests can purchase a mug themed to their resort that will become a keepsake when the holiday ends. During their length of stay, they can continually refill the mug at the food court self-service beverage island at their resort.

Golfers have special door-to-door transportation between Walt Disney World owned-and-operated hotels and Walt Disney World golf facilities.

Magic Your Way Package Plus Dining

Available only with packages that include theme park tickets and accommodations at a Disney-owned and operated hotel, the new Disney's Magic Your Way Package Plus Dining is a convenient and affordable way for guests to experience many of the unique Disney dining locations found across the Walt Disney World Resort. Each day guests can enjoy the following (per person, per package night) from more than 100 participating Walt Disney World Resort restaurants:

  1. One table service meal -- includes appetizer, entrée, dessert, non-alcoholic beverage and gratuity/service charge

  2. One counter service meal -- includes entrée, dessert and non-alcoholic beverage

  3. One snack -- such as a snack-cart ice cream, box of popcorn, or medium soft drink at select counter-service and snack-cart locations

  2. Select the Magic Your Way Ticket that best suits your needs. - The Magic Your Way Base Ticket allows you admission to one Theme Park per day. Adding the Park Hopper Option gives you the ultimate flexibility as you can come and go as you please through multiple Theme Parks on the same day for the entire length of their ticket. Recommend Magic Plus Pack for anyone staying four or more days. This option provides a certain number of "Plus" visits based on the length of the ticket purchased allowing clients to visit: Disney's Typhoon Lagoon Water Park, Disney's Blizzard Beach Water Park, Downtown Disney Pleasure Island, DisneyQuest Indoor Interactive Theme Park, and Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex.
  3. (Valid Theme Park admission and Resort ID are required). And with the new Disney's Magical Express Service¹, buses take you from Orlando International Airport to your Disney Resort Hotel while Disney picks up your bags and takes them straight to your room. And when your vacation is over, your bags are whisked back to the Orlando International Airport.

  6. If you have existing/unused tickets from a previous Walt Disney World vacation you can upgrade to Magic Your Way tickets - If you already have unused days remaining on 5- or 7-day Park Hopper tickets from a previous Walt Disney World vacation, you will still be able to use the remaining days left on those passes to enter the theme parks and park hop. Those interested in upgrading pre-existing tickets and applying the value of the remaining days towards the purchase of new Magic Your Way Tickets will be able to do so at the ticket service locations at any of the Walt Disney World theme parks or guest service desks at Disney onsite resort hotels.
  7. If you want to combine a Walt Disney World vacation with a Disney Cruise Line getaway, we suggest a 7-night Land and Sea Package. Guests can purchase a 7-night land and sea package that includes 3 or 4-nights at the Walt Disney World Resort followed by a 3- or 4-night cruise to the Bahamas. The package will include a 4- or 5-day Magic Your Way Premium Ticket, which includes Park Hopper Option and Magic Plus Pack Option. Guests cannot add on the No Expiration Option. All guests in the same party will receive the same ticket - the Magic Your Way Premium Ticket.

Newest Attractions and Entertainment

The new "American Idol" attraction will bring the television and pop culture phenomenon to life at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. The attraction, with a Grand Opening on 14 February 2009, will be located at Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park and will follow the model of the high-energy show. Disney guests will be able to experience the challenge of auditioning, the rush of performing on stage in competition, or the thrill of judging the performances in a live interactive entertainment setting with all the glitz and glamour of the distinctive "American Idol" set. That experience will include an audition process, open to all eligible to register, where guests perform “live” in front of a Disney’s Hollywood Studios producer for the chance to be cast in a theme park show. If shown to have that star quality during the screening process and after backstage preparation -- working with a vocal coach, hair and make-up -- it’s lights up and showtime for the lucky guest in front of a “live” audience and a panel of judges. Guest performers with the highest votes will compete in an end-of-day Grand Finale show at Walt Disney World, and the winner of the Grand Finale show will receive a guaranteed reservation for a future regional stadium audition -- to ensure no waiting in long lines -- for the "American Idol" TV show.
