What Do The Lyrics To ‘We Gotta Get Out of This Place’ Mean?

By Rebecca

The song We Gotta Get Out of This Place’ was written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil and was performed by the band, The Animals. It was written in 1965 referring to the 1960’s when the younger generation wanted to change their lives and the old ways of living.

The opening lines of the first verse, ‘In this dirty old part of the city where the sun refuses to shine’ are saying that there is a lack of hope in the city and it’s a dark and scary place. There is also a line that refers to some kids wanting to speak up, but no one else is going to help, ‘People tell me ain’t no use in trying.’ The three lines,’ Now my girl your so young and pretty and one thing I know is true you’ll be dead before your time is due,’ means that you’re still young so don’t spend your life in this place or you might get so frustrated you could do something dangerous and unexpected.

Verse 2 is repetitive after the verses and the chorus. Mann and Weil write the lines,’ Watch my daddy in bed and tired watch his hair been turning grey’ refers to all the cities elders getting even older. Another line is ‘He’s been working and slaving his life away’ means that the elders had no time for fun only time for work. The line ‘Every night and day’ says that they had to work as long as their boss wanted them to. The word ‘Yeah yeah yeah yeah’ leads into the chorus.

The chorus is also repetitive and sung after 2 verses. The chorus is where the Younger generation screams ‘ We gotta get out of this place if it’s the last thing we ever do.This refers to the younger generation screaming it’s time to escape from this place and find a better place somewhere and somehow.
Next comes the last four lines of the first verse.

Then, the repetitive verse.

Then the chorus.
‘We Gotta Get Out of This Place’ was written in response to the younger generation wanting to move to a place where they can do more things and have some fun.

I chose this song to study because it shows how much in the 1960’s how many children were involved with being in a big dirty old city and no time to play games and have fun.
