Writing the Commentary to Your Short Story

Your commentary should be approximately 750 words, making a total of approximately 1500 words when added to your story.
The commentary is marked against the AO1, AO2, AO3 and AO4 Assessment Objectives.
What follows is a plan to help you put your commentary together. Feel free to alter the sequence of the ideas, but make sure you included everything in your commentary.


  • Briefly introduce your short story – what is the genre, who are the characters, and what is the basic plot? (75 words.)

  • Which book inspired your story? What element of the text did you use as inspiration? (75 words.)

  • (Point) What was one of the main ideas you wanted to explore in your story (theme, character, language, structure)? (Evidence and explain) Which images, words, and literary techniques did you use to explore this theme/idea? (Connect)How does this connect to your partner text and to any other texts you have been inspired by? (150-200 words)

  • (Point) How did you use the structure of your story to make it effective? (Evidence) Did you make any changes to your first draft to change the structure? Or did you use any flashback or foreshadowing in your story? (Explain) How did these things make your story more effective? (Connect)How does this connect to your partner text or to any other texts you have been inspired by? (150-200 words)
  • (Point) What was one of the other main ideas you wanted to explore in your story (theme, character, language, structure)? (Evidence and explain) Which images, words, literary techniques did you use to explore this theme/idea?
