Family Faith Sunday
Sample Children’s Talk
This talk is suitable for doing with children gathered at the front but can also be done to the congregation at large with children seated with parents etc.
You will need ‘Bassetts’ Jelly Babies for this talk –other versions will not work.

Today we are learning about the importance of family and spending time together to learn about God.

And something I like to share and spend time doing is eating my favourite sweets!
Who here likes sweets? (pause to let children respond)

Who can tell me what their favourite sweet is? (allow response)

Some of my favourite sweets are “Jelly Babies”

Does anyone here like Jelly Babies? (allow response)

Open the packet and eat one and say ‘mmmm I just love them’

Maybe share with a few children and ask them do they like them too?

Now here is an interesting fact about “Jelly Babies”, when they were first made they were not called jelly babies, they were called "Peace Babies" because they were produced after the 1st World War, and each colour represented a country, which fought in the war.
But we all know that it wasn't long before the 2nd World War started, and because sweets and chocolate were not essential goods, the production of "Peace Babies" stopped.
But our story doesn't stop there, you see after the War, a man decided to buy the factory where "Peace Babies" were made. This man was a very special man, as he loved Jesus.

Can I let you into a secret? Not many people know this secret…

There are secret symbols hidden on each "Jelly Baby" which can help us tell others about the wonderful love of Jesus Christ!

Do you want to know what they are? (allow response)
Ask for 6 volunteers.

Give each child a different coloured “jelly baby”

Ask them to lick off the flour.

Ask children in turn, to describe their “Jelly baby”

Black = When you lick off the flour you can see a Heart, which represents the sin in our lives.

Green= You will see the Baby Crying, which represents God's sadness that People didn't know the way to Heaven.

Red = You will see a B which represents "Blood" as Christ died to show how much he loved us and to show the way to heaven

Pink = Is a Baby, when we become a Christian we become a "child of God" (or born again).

Yellow= Is wearing a Necklace, which represents the riches of Heaven.

Orange= Is wearing a Waist Bag which tells us that we need to be prepared for Jesus coming again.

Isn’t that a fantastic message . . . all from a packet of “Jelly babies!”
You know God has given us a fantastic message.

He has given us the Bible to help us know about Him and learn how to live our lives for Him.

God wants us to spend time with Him.

One way is to take time and spend time reading God’s word.

In Deuteronomy chapter 6 verses 5 to 7 it tells us how we should love God.

In fact it is so important that we are commanded to do this.

It says we must:

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

So we have been commanded to tell people about God and the good news of Jesus.

Our parents, Sunday school teachers, ministers and those who love Jesus are all commanded to tell others about God and share the good news of Jesus Christ.

At the end you could give the children a small packet of "Jelly Babies" so they can try the story for themselves.
Optional extra activity for children to go with the Key verse:
In Deuteronomy chapter 6 verses 5 to 7 it tells us how we should love God.

In fact it is so important that we are commanded to do this.

It says we must:

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

Repeat the reading with actions - (actions)

Love the = put your 2 hands over your heart

Lord your God = point up to heaven

With all your heart = put your 2 hands over your heart

and with all your soul = point to sole of foot!

and with all your strength = both arms up showing muscles

these commandments . . . = open hands like a book

on your hearts = put your 2 hands over your heart

impress them on your children = press hands together & point to children

talk about them = 2 hands making bird beak open and close

sit at home = sit down

walk along the road = walk on the spot

lie down = both hands at side of face and do action of sleeping

and when you get up = jump up with arms out stretched
